Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. He is widely known as Eminem or Marshall Mathers to his fans. Eminem has a rough childhood because his family struggled with poverty and even said that he was abused throughout his childhood. His family relocated to Detroit, Michigan and that is where he began rapping in clubs at the age of 14.
As a child, he wasn’t very focused in school and got held back for unexcused absences, but he finally dropped out because he was determined to make it in the world of music. Eminem was a part of a band D12, or the ‘dirty dozen’, and also performed as a solo artist for a while. He released his first album ‘Infinite’ in 1996 but it sold poorly.
In 1997, Eminem competed in the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles, which allowed him to catch the attention of Dr. Dre, the head of Aftermath Entertainment. Dr. Dre became Eminem’s mentor and producer and helped him release his album The Slim Shady LP in 1999.
Eminem won four MTV video music awards and two grammy awards for the ‘The Slim Shady LP’ album. Even as a star, Eminem had a few rough patches, from his toxic marriage to Kim, to getting arrested, and even with his mother suing him. He has released many albums and songs since, and continues to hold his fan’s attention.
