Melanie Adele Martinez was born in April of 1995 in New York. As a child she attended Plaza Elementary School and had a music teacher, Mr. Nadien, who would give her singing lessons. In her kindergarten years she began writing poetry. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Biggie Smalls and The Beetles were some of the people she listened to for inspiration to pursue her own musical career.
As a teen, Melanie’s interest in a musical career grew, while she attended Baldwin High School she taught herself to play the guitar and then won the ‘Baldwin Singing Competition’. Martinez is known to be a very emotional girl, her classmates called her a “cry baby” because she would get so overwhelmed in school that she would begin to cry. Not to worry, those bullies inspired her album ‘Cry Baby’. Aside from singing and music, Melanie had other interests as a child such as painting and photography, she often used these interests to express the strong emotions she was feeling.
Melanie Martinez decided to audition for the third season of The Voice, when she performed her audition song (‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears), Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green turned their chairs when they began hearing her voice. She ultimately chose Adam Levine and went on to further lengths in the competition but was eliminated on the sixth week of ‘Live Shows’. That wasn’t the end of her music career though, she spent 2013 writing songs. In 2014 she released ‘Dollhouse’, and after seeing Dollhouse become successful, ‘Atlantic Records’ signed Melanie Martinez. Later in 2015, her album Cry Baby was released.
